Last rounds are always important, since a loss can’t be compensated by a win anymore. So both teams were dedicated to win and did so! Against the physically disabled Kenny lost, but Watu (Nxf7 in the Petrof), Henry (model game against the Pirc) and Mabu (outplaying his opponent after an early queen exchange) got SA three points.

In the women match against the United Arab Emirates, Monique quickly gained material and a point after badly timed castling of her opponent. Melissa also needed just to collect material to score her eight point in ten matches. Anzel took longer, but in the Exchange variation of the Queen’s gambit her minority attack gained her a pawn and later the win. Only Carmen, who was not in good form, lost her game.

As can be seen on chess-results the Men ended on the 58th place, just behind Egypt but before countries like Iceland and Argentina. The women made the 57th place as the top African team, and were 3rd in the D-category on SB points.
Well done guys!
First in Africa with the ladies.
Second amongst the men on tie-break.
Best Federation (Men + Ladies), Gaprindashvilli Cup, in Africa.
Congratulations!!
Ha…Ha…Ha…
Guess who has the last laugh! Viva SA!!!
Well done guys and girls.
Well played, everyone!!
a path way leading to better tomorrows
Jammer dat ek so bietjie “gal” gaan braak hier!
I was asked to comment in English by one of my chess friends..so here goes…
Dear Chessa.. i know this blog is about Dresden, but this is probably the only way I can get a message across? I think it’s a shame that there wasn’t a single photo published throughout the African Junior CC that was held in SA. Why did you guys not grab this opportunity to make something about it! SA was the host! Well done for us! It’s something that doesn’t happen every year, I see it as an honour! Why is there only one group photo and not of the winners in the two categories too? Those chess players are great, they deserve more prominent attention as they are the winners..I do apologise if this sounds too harsh, but as a chess blogger hungry for chess news from SA and even when such an important event takes place in my country, I feel I can’t just sit here and keep quiet! I do hope you have at least approached the newspapers to publish something about the event!
I agree with Nikita. An opportunity to publicise chess in South Africa was lost. As host of the junior event, they could have done more than they did.
Hoorah! Photo published of the winners!
Just a pity there wasn’t any throughout the CC.
Thanks for the other fodies too… saw the link now…!:)
